Haas delay width tricks vs true phase issues
Fake width from a short Haas delay can sound huge on headphones, then collapse when the mix folds to mono. That is not the same problem as a true L/R phase fight. Learn the tell, fix the right thing first, and use free PHIXER only to check leftover stereo beds.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Continuous, frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover stereo cancellation. It is not a Haas delay, not a widener, not an M/S encoder, and not a mic time-aligner. Use it to check and repair residual L/R band fights after you kill or tame fake delay width.
What Haas width actually is
A Haas / precedence trick copies a part, delays one side by roughly 10 to 40 ms, and pans hard. Your ear locks to the early side and hears "width." Headphones love it. Club PA, phone speakers, and LoRo delivery often do not.
When width collapses in mono
- Comb on the sum. Near-identical delayed copies cancel bands when L+R combine.
- Low-mid hollow. Vocals, guitars, and pads lose chest on phones.
- Correlation near zero or negative while headphones still feel wide. Hint card: +1 / 0 / -1 in 60 seconds.
- Mute the delayed copy and mono body returns. That is Haas, not a mystery phase disease.
Haas trick vs true phase issue
| Symptom | Likely cause | First move |
|---|---|---|
| Width dies when you mute the delay copy | Haas / short delay fake width | Reduce or remove the delayed copy; prefer real doubles / EQ / reverb |
| Side energy too loud after an imager or M/S boost | Width balance, not spectral phase | Protect Mid; pull Side. Guide: M/S vs phase rotation |
| Whole path flips better with Ø | Polarity on a dual path | Invert polarity; re-null |
| Attacks disagree by samples or ms | Timing / mic distance | Time-align, then mono-check |
| After Ø + timing + no Haas, a band still cancels on fold | True continuous L/R phase fight | PHIXER check / repair, then mono A/B |
How PHIXER helps you check
- True mono fold. Sum L+R. Do not mute one ear and call it mono.
- Hunt Haas first. Find delayed copies, micro-shift wideners, or "stereoize" presets. Bypass them. If mono body returns, you found fake width.
- M/S hygiene. If Side dominates, fix Mid/Side balance before phase toys. Mid/side vs stereo phase rotation.
- Polarity and timing. Flip Ø. Nudge samples. Re-fold.
- Read correlation as a hint. Near 0 after Haas is expected. After Haas is gone, still near 0 or negative on a stereo bed means dig deeper. Correlation quick-read.
- PHIXER only if the path must stay stereo and a band still hollows on phone / club / LoRo fold. A/B in mono. If nothing improves, undo. When not to use PHIXER.
Do not use PHIXER as a widener
- Wrong job: recreating Haas width with phase rotation.
- Wrong job: papering over an engaged Haas delay you have not mono-checked.
- Right job: checking whether a stereo print still fights by band after fake width is gone.
- Creative Haas stays creative. Keep it if you want the effect and accept mono cost. Be honest on the fold.
